Itchy?
I have a private student who recently complained about an extremely itchy scalp. I recommended she discuss with her hairdresser or dermatologist since I cannot diagnose any conditions*. From a yogic perspective, there is a mudra (hand gesture) that can potentially help with itchiness: it’s called Vayu Mudra *. It is believed to help balance the body’s air element (known as Vata in Ayurveda). It is pictured below (yes that’s my hand!)
Here is how you place your fingers for Vayu Mudra:
Gradually fold your index finger and touch the base of the thumb.
Apply slight pressure with your thumb and press the index finger.
You may find the pressure a little uncomfortable initially, but it will ease with time.
Keep the rest of the fingers straight.
Keep your hands steady and breathe calmly
Hold for several breaths or up to several minutes
*always consult with your healthcare provider
** according to Ayurveda (a holistic system of medicine from India), this mudra may also help with dryness, bloating, gas, dizziness, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and dryness of eyes and hair.
